Heavy Metal Monday – Ep. 2

February 17, 2014 by Tim Granda

DC-tiny-wedge Welcome back to another installment of Heavy Metal Monday, a new series here on Doom Cycle which features my scans from the first 10 years of Heavy Metal Magazine. Each episode is guaranteed to blow your mind with a barrage of killer artwork from all over the globe. Though you won’t see complete stories, you will find rad panels, full pages, back covers, and some cool ads. It’s going to be a killer trip so make sure to stop by whenever you see a new episode announced.

It’s the summer of 1977, and the work featured is from the June through August issues of the magazine. The work that you’ll see will be from artists Richard Corben, Philippe Druillet, EE Davis, Nicole Claveloux, Moebius, and S Bihannic.

When you see a pic you really dig, make sure to click on it and then again on the little green arrow at the bottom of the frame. My scans are big – some say they even throb – so do yourself a favor and fill those eyes with detail!

Heavy Metal Monday – Ep. 1

February 10, 2014 by Tim Granda

DC-tiny-wedge Enter the first installment of Heavy Metal Monday, a new series here on Doom Cycle which will feature my scans from the first 10 years of Heavy Metal Magazine. Each episode is guaranteed to blow your mind with a barrage of killer artwork from all over the globe. Though you won’t see complete stories, you will find rad panels, full pages, back covers, and cool old ads. It’s going to be a killer trip so make sure to stop by whenever you see a new episode announced.

Heavy Metal had a HUGE influence on me as a kid. From the moment I laid eyes on it my life would never be  the same. It was as if the world suddenly grew 10 times larger, and you could feel every tremor and shock as it happened. I’ve always dug stuff like Dr. Strange and Ghost Rider, and saw my fair share of E.C., Charlton, Mad, Creepy etc. so I was fortunate to know early on that comics had the potential to be more than just superhero stuff. But not like this. Not fucking like this!

Who knew comic books could be so violent? So full of sex? Not me. Not the grubby kid with the KISS posters all over his walls and a floor covered with Cheap Trick and Deep Purple albums.

Yet here in my hands was a magazine-sized comic book full of all that stuff, and more! One seriously bizarre story after another, and the art was unbelievable! But just as shocking was discovering that often the artist drew it and wrote it all himself. You could do that? You didn’t need a whole team to ink, color, and write the damn thing? Fuuuuuuck.

Heavy Metal Monday is brought to you by a young dirty kid who just rolled out of the trails on his Team Mongoose.  A kid who stopped by the local 7-11 on his way home to grab the issues we’ll be seeing. I’ve been keeping them safe for the little dude ever since.

Frazetta Friday – Ep. 12

February 7, 2014 by Tim Granda

DC-tiny-wedge Welcome to episode 12 of Frazetta Friday! I’ve got another great batch of paintings for you to check out, and remember: as with all the pics on the site make sure to click on the ones you really like so you can check ’em out up close (once the pic opens, click the little green arrow on the bottom for full size). Whenever possible, I try to provide a nice big a file so those who’ve never had the chance to soak up all the details can get that opportunity. You’ll also get the name of the piece and the year it was created too… good to know, right?

So sit back, free your head, and soak up all the genius that is Frank Frazetta!

Black Friday Steals

December 13, 2013 by Tim Granda

black-friday

DC-tiny-wedge Here in the USA, the day after the Thanksgiving holiday is known as Black Friday. It’s regarded as the start of the Christmas shopping season, and many retailers open super early and offer big discounts. Keeping with this tradition, a lot of cool shops in the chopper community are offering up some killer sales as well.

Here are a few deals to get your shopping started, and make sure to check back – I plan to keep updating this thread as I track down more rad stuff so scroll on down there for the latest additions.

If you happen to run a shop that’s offering up some Black Friday discounts, or know someone who is, drop me a line and I’ll get them in here too: timgranda@gmail.com

The VNM will have nearly everything in the store at 40% off, and the first 250 orders will be getting two monochrome patches for free! If that wasn’t cool enough, they’re dropping a pair of logo tokens in two random orders for a chance to win one of these killer helmets, painted by Horsebites! The sale starts Thursday at 10pm and ends Friday at midnight.

From now until Sunday night, the entire Show Class Magazine store is 10% off! Just use code “10THANKS” at checkout to have 10% taken off your entire order.

While you’re there, make sure to grab a copy of their latest issue #16. It features anastonishing front and back cover by artist Josh Kurpius (yes, those are photos of real stained glass!). There’s also some cool new goods on the site to check out, and don’t forget to pick up their 2014 calender – it’s the best one around.

Artist David Paul Seymour is also having a Black Friday sale, and it starts at midnight on Friday the 29th, CST.

For $15 bucks, you’re entered to win one of 50 tubes he has available. Each tube contains two mystery posters/art prints, plus three pieces of what he calls “rip-rap” (ie: black and white cut off test prints, color pallet tests, etc.). If that itself wasn’t a steal, one of the fifty mystery tubes will contain an original ink drawing on Bristol board of a recent project.

Pretty damn cool! Maybe you’ll grab a few of these?
