Adi Gilbert

December 6, 2013 by Tim Granda

DC-tiny-wedge Adi Gilbert is an illustrator / designer based in Bristol with a mad passion for motorcycles, BMX, and skateboards. He’s the man behind 99SECONDS, and you’ve no doubt seen his work for Sideburn Magazine and their event posters like Dirt Quake and Rollerburn. His list of clients is long and impressive, yet he still manages to find the time to also run Folklore Brand with George King. It’s a really cool clothing line inspired by tales of myth, creatures, nature, old machinery, and motorcycles. This man keeps busy!

Gilbert’s interest in art began at a young age from reading comics like 2000AD and Commando, but it wasn’t until he left University with a science degree that his fascination with art became a passion. After witnessing all the unique artwork being created within the skateboarding scene, his desire to start drawing and painting again grew like a wild fire, leading him to abandon his career to pursue a new path in art.

Part of Gilbert’s appeal lies in his ability to project his enthusiasm for the subject matter through his art. His love for screen prints, vintage advertisements, old comic books, and propaganda posters is evident in his design choices, his use of color, washes, and his beautiful line work. Gilbert also loves to drop us in the middle of the action, leaving us scrambling to keep from getting run over.

If you’re looking for some killer art to liven up your home, office, or shop, Gilbert has quite a few signed prints available on his site 99SECONDS. As busy as he is, he’s always up for doing new stuff, so if you’re looking for some custom work give him a shout.

Look for more Adi Gilbert news in the future here on Doom Cycle.

Frazetta Friday – Ep. 3

Sadam (Yoshizawa)

December 6, 2013 by Tim Granda

DC-tiny-wedge Japanese artist Sadam (Yoshizawa) wields a pen with the same skill and grace as his idol Kyuzo weilds a sword. But where Kyuzo, one of Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai, spent most of his time slicing open bandits with his katana, Sadam spends his time slicing up abandoned pools with his skateboard. Many of you with a skating background may already be familiar with Sadam’s work in Thrasher, or have seen some of his boards, but for the rest of us, this show is just getting started!

His work brings together all the ingredients bikers typically love: skulls, babes, demons, snakes, flames, frogs… well, maybe not frogs, but Sadam makes a great case for them! While his subject matter has great appeal, it’s his masterful technique that will knock you out. It wouldn’t surprise me if some shops and magazines in the build community start knocking on this guy’s door.
In the meantime, head over to Sadam’s site and grab some of his cool shirts and posters. You’ll be able to say you were into this dude’s stuff before all your buddies were.

Frazetta Friday – Ep. 2

December 6, 2013 by Tim Granda

DC-tiny-wedge Welcome to the second edition of Frazetta Friday, an episodic series here onDoom Cycle where you’ll find yourselfcleaving the heads off your enemies, bending the will of huge beasts with dark incantations, climbing mountains of rotting flesh and splintered bone, and leaving behind heavy footprints filled with the blood of those who opposed you. Death! How sweet the scent! May your goals be fulfilled, your voluptuous queen left satisfied, and… Ahem.

Let’s start this episode off with Frazetta’s 1967 oil painting “The Sea Witch”, which some of you younger types will recognize as the cover for Wolfmother’s debut album. The band, who finally have a new album out next month, have also used his paintings on their singles and other assorted merchandise. Check ‘em out.

During the last installment I mentioned how influential Frazetta’s work was/is, but did you know that the skimpy iron-bikini Princess Leia wore in Return of the Jedi was inspired by Frank? Yes, it sure was (according to costume designer Aggie Guerard Rodgers). Makes sense now that you think about. Pretty cool!

See ya next time. I’m off to battle… a cold.

David Lozeau

December 6, 2013 by Tim Granda

DC-tiny-wedge David Lozeau’s (pronounced Low-zo) character-driven style is a quirky blend of Mexican folk art, 1950s cartoon cell-animation, traditional tattoo imagery, and pure southern California Lowbrow. Lozeau’s work features his unique perspective on life, death, and all the gory stuff in between. His paintings have appeared in galleries across three continents, he’s collaborated with Disney, Harley-Davidson, and his work has been featured in tons of books and magazines.
